Hot pot is just that: a pot of soup you use to cook your choice of vegetables and proteins for an interactive dining experience. Think hibachi, but you man a cauldron.
Hot pot is usually a base for cooking meat, but it can definitely be vegan. At MUMU Hot Pot, they offer several vegan broths and a variety of tofu add-ons for a fully vegan hot pot experience.
MUMU offers individual hot pots instead of a large communal pot. This way, if one person in your party is vegan and the other isn’t, or if one of you prefers things on the spicy side, everyone can enjoy something without oversight or worry.

I’m shifting into soup mode! I was invited to visit MUMU Hot Pot, a casual Asian fusion-style restaurant known for its individual hot pots and combos.
My bestie and I each received a Single Vegetarian Combo. Each combo comes with a choice of soup base, two vegan sides (different tofu options or added vegetables), a medium-sized vegetable platter (mushrooms, spinach, broccoli, cabbage), and a choice of rice or noodles. I chose the Tom Yum broth and udon noodles, and she chose the mushroom broth and vermicelli rice noodles. We ended up with fresh tofu, fried bean curd rolls (think tofu skin), and fried tofu pods (fluffy fried tofu cubes), along with our vegetable platter and noodles.
After we placed our order, the hot pots arrived filled with our selected broth, and from there, we managed the temperature at our seats. Shortly after, we received our soup fixings and got to boiling! Everything cooked relatively quickly and for mainly the same duration, so it didn’t take long before it was ready to enjoy. My Tom Yum broth was hot and sour, and while it had a peppery kick, I wouldn’t consider it spicy. The mushroom broth was savory and rich, and it made me even more excited for Fall. The cooking was up to us, but I can confirm that the veggies and noodles were fresh and tasty, plus I can never get enough tofu!
MUMU Hot Pot has a massive sauce-building station. Complete with soy sauces, spice blends, fresh herbs, and more, you have everything needed to concoct your perfect dipping companion. The other Tiffany (yes, we have the same name, and she’s been my bff for over 20 years) is a fan of spicy stuff, so she had a grand time mixing different combinations, while I was content with my simple blend of soy, hoisin, garlic, and green onions. Why mess with perfection?
Find the complete list of vegan menu items for MUMU Hot Pot below. Their website menu indicates which items are vegan. For their custom sauce bar, they label non-vegan items, but if you have any questions or concerns, please ask your server.
I had FUN eating hot pot! The other Tiffany did, too. It was fun to chat while manning our own soup stations, then switching partway through to try each other’s soup. We also both agreed we probably could have shared one Single Vegetarian Combo instead of each having our own, but we would have needed more tofu!
While I have had hot pot at home, enjoying it in a community setting felt elevated and more authentic. We visited the MUMU Hot Pot in Pleasanton, but there are 6 other locations in California, from San Francisco to Torrance.
Have you had vegan hot pot? What do you think of the idea of individual pots?
