Get ready to meet UNMEAT!
I met unMeat at Expo West and had the opportunity to sample so many of their dishes! I was hooked by their name and immediately a fan once I tasted the products. After Expo unMeat sent me some full-size samples to try and I am ready to share how I used them!
I received each variety of unMeat’s Fish Free Tuna-Style Flakes in Hot & Spicy, Sunflower Oil, and Water, and each flavor of canned unMeat in Luncheon-Meat Style and Burger-Style. I was most excited for the canned unMeat in Luncheon and Burger styles, as I grew up eating SPAM. I used the Fish-Free Tuna in Water in a traditional casserole form, the Burger-Style unMeat as “fries”, and the Luncheon-Style in a simple fried rice.
My favorite was the Luncheon-Style unMeat that I cubed, pan-fried, and tossed in fried rice. I mixed the unMeat with white rice, a blend of peas and carrots, scrambled Just Egg, green onions, and soy sauce. The Luncheon unMeat offers a tame umami, and is juicy and fatty without being overly salty. I am glad I have another can left because I can’t wait to make Musubi next!
The Burger Style unMeat is packed with a smoky flavor. When lightly breaded in unbleached flour and tossed in the air-fryer, they make for a fun protein-fueled appetizer. They remind me of “chicken fries” offered at fast-food restaurants. I served with a simple dip of vegan mayo mixed with 24 Vegan Sriracha for a spicy and tangy twist. Even my mother gave these a thumbs-up and she is not a fan of SPAM!
Lastly, I modified a traditional tuna noodle casserole recipe to both vegan and my overall liking, to include the unMeat Fish-Free Tuna-Style Flakes in Water. This casserole was AMAZING! I portioned into ramekins for easy reheating later, and when pulled from the oven they present as bubbly, creamy, comforting, and filling. The Fish-Free Tuna is meaty, tender, and not overly fishy in flavor. It is a tame take on fish and I could eat this again in many forms. I grew up eating a lot of casseroles and pot-pies so this was an instant favorite for me. I can’t wait to think up a way to use the Hot & Spicy variety! I am thinking an easy tuna salad with the Sunflower Oil unMeat Tuna. How would you use them?
You will begin to see unMeat Luncheon Meat Style at Walmart stores nationwide. In the meantime you can find it available for shipping at Walmart.com and even online vegan retailers like GTFOitsVegan.com I am a huge fan of this new SPAM alternative! UnMeat is 100% Plant-Based, cholesterol-free, non-GMO, and offsets all plastic use. I can’t wait to try the rest of their product line at home, like their sausages, burgers, crumbles, and nuggets!
