Do you know Jack? Jack & Annie’s is a plant-based food company, that produces frozen and refrigerated vegan-friendly meat alternatives made with Jack(fruit).
Jackfruit is of the fig tree species, produces the largest of all tree-bourne fruit, and grows in tropical regions. Depending on ripeness and preparation the flavor is sweet or savory, making for the perfect fruit! It’s a sustainable crop as it is easy to grow, produces up to 200 fruits a year, and is drought resistant. Its only drawback is prepping for use, due to its large size. Thanks to Annie, we can now reap the benefits of Jackfruit without all the prep work!
Jack and Annie’s makes a variety of frozen and refrigerated items, that have recently been popping up in stores near me. I selected a few to try from both Target and Sprouts! I opted for Jack and Annie’s Nuggets, Buffalo Wings, Crumbles, and Breakfast Sausage Links. The texture of each is juicy and meaty, which is what makes jackfruit such an amazing alternative to meat.
My favorite of the 4 products I tried is Jack and Annie’s Buffalo Wings. A juicy center is coated with crispy breading, and a tangy buffalo sauce that’s not too hot for my palate. The wings are shaped more like a drumstick than the nugget counterpart, and remind me of the frozen buffalo chicken strips I loved as a kid before going veg. The Nuggets are also crispy coated, but the breading is buttery and similar to a drive-thru variety. I am certain these could be served up to a meat-eater without complaint!
The Crumbles are gluten-free and perfect for anything from tacos to breakfast casseroles. Lightly seasoned, the crumbles are perfect on their own or with added spices. I tried mine in a taco boat and definitely went back for seconds and thirds. Jack and Annie’s Breakfast Sausage Links are also a gluten-free option! I love the texture of the links, as they hold their outer shape while still having a soft meaty center. The smell of maple syrup wafts when you sizzle in a skillet, foreshadowing their sweet flavor with hints of savory spices. I served mine with some Just Egg and flapjacks.
I found my Jack & Annie’s Breakfast Sausages at Sprouts, and the Nuggets, Wings, and Crumbles were all purchased at Target. Next, I think I would like to try Jack & Annie’s Meatballs! How about you?
