Mushroom magic at Fungi Foods!
Fungi Foods began as a pop-up vendor and, as of April 2026, shares a brick-and-mortar restaurant space in Oakland. I visited this weekend with my friend Jessica, aka One Hot Mama’s Salsa, and we both agree that Jake’s mushrooms should be considered “magical”.
Creator of Fungi Foods, Jake Stolz, uses his locally grown mushrooms to create plant-based comfort-style dishes. His passion for mushrooms started as a hobby, but just as the mushrooms outgrew his apartment, his dreams began to expand beyond farming into the food space. And boy, am I glad they did!
We ordered a hefty amount, including shareable bites, and took home two of the famed KFV Bowls for later (find my review of that here). I ordered the “Buffalo Blue” fried maitake mushroom sandwich for myself and the BBQ Cajun Mac and Caesar Fries to share. Jessica ordered the Caesar Salad and Coleslaw, and we both had a side of the house Cornbread with Maple Cinnamon Butter.
The Buffalo Blue is a fried maitake mushroom sandwich served on a vegan brioche bun and loaded with house-made coleslaw, pickles, and blue-cheese crumbles, then coated in buffalo sauce. It was as big as my head, and I have no idea how I managed to eat it, but I did get buffalo sauce all over my face. The sauce was peppery hot and made my nose run, but it was tame enough for me to eat, and the combination of cool coleslaw and tangy pickles helped to balance the heat. The sandwich is generally served with traditional hand-cut fries, but I opted to upgrade mine to “loaded fries” and chose Caesar Salad Fries instead. The fries were salted and topped with the usual Caesar salad fixings, but vegan: parmesan, oyster mushroom “anchovies,” house-made Caesar dressing, scallions, and a chili crisp that made me cough- because I am a sissy! This side is perfect for “girl dinner,” and I hope Jake makes it a permanent menu item. Both the sandwich and fries were delicious, fried to perfection, and cemented my trust in Jake to always make mushrooms taste delicious (and not slimy or weird).
We shared the BBQ Cajun Mac, and it was again clear why Jake won last year’s Vegan Mac Down. Cavatappi pasta coated in a cheesy, creamy béchamel sauce, topped with BBQ-marinated mushrooms and Cajun ranch (that KICKS), then finished with scallions. The BBQ mushrooms are sweet and smoky, while the ranch packs heat that the béchamel helps to tame.
Jessica’s salad was fresh, light, savory, and outbreak-free. The salad was tossed with the same toppings as my fries, but instead of standard croutons, the leaves were coated in garlic breadcrumbs. This way, each piece of chopped lettuce is coated in dressing and breadcrumbs. Absolutely genius!
Fungi Foods’ new space is all the vibes. It’s pretty, it’s funky, it’s fun, and it includes intimate seating, bar tops, outdoor dining, and even family-style tables. We arrived on Saturday just after dining hours had started, and for the entirety of our visit, the place was packed not only with patrons but with a line out the door for takeout (yes, they offer delivery!) The tables are set with intention, featuring wildflower-filled mushroom vases and conversational card games, and information cards highlighting their mission of “cultivating community through compassion”.
To keep things community-oriented, Fungi Foods offers a weekly raffle and monthly doodle contest for restaurant visitors. For the raffle, each purchase earns an entry, and for the doodle contest, simply follow the prompt, create, and, if you share your masterpiece on social media and win, the gift card prize doubles from $50 to $100! The same goes for the weekly raffle: share your visit on social media, and if selected as the winner, the Fungi Foods Gift Card Prize doubles from $50 to $100.
Aside from the tasty mushroom menu, Jake sells mushroom grow kits in different varieties and his best-selling mushroom jerky (you HAVE to try the Coconut Curry Jerky!). If you aren’t able to visit his restaurant location soon, you can also purchase Fungi Foods Mushroom Jerky online at fungifoods.com.
The restaurant is located in Oakland off 25th and Broadway, and offers both paid and unpaid street parking nearby.
