New Vegan Corn Dogs From Walmart!

Walmart has been a hot topic in the vegan space, as they recently clearanced out a ton of their frozen plant-based inventory. Some fear it means they plan to stop carrying as many vegan goods, while I think it’s more likely they need to make space for their own line of products. With the new addition of “Bettergoods Plant-Based Corn Dogs,” it seems we’re nearing our answer.

I am stoked to see Walmart find it worthwhile to make its own vegan corn dogs, implying demand. Other brands have been making vegan corn dogs for years, so Walmart must have seen the dollar signs and wanted them to stay in-house. While monopolization isn’t great, this could mean we will see more affordable store-brand vegan products in Walmart, similarly to Trader Joe’s. While this reduces choice, it does benefit those in food deserts and can make plant-based products more accessible overall.

My Review

Two years ago, Walmart introduced the Bettergoods brand to do just that and has been slowly rolling out new plant-based products since. The newest addition to their plant-based lineup is frozen corn dogs, and they’re delicious! The batter is fluffy, sweet, and salty, and the hot dog is tender and savory. I prepared mine in the oven, but an air fryer or deep fryer can also be used. I kept my taste test simple and only paired the vegan corn dogs with French’s Mustard (as one does). I did, however, use the new limited-edition “French’s Goomi Green Mustard” from their collaboration with the new Minions movie. The only change to the mustard is the addition of spirulina extract to make it green, and it’s giving Nickelodeon slime for real! The combo is a perfect match, and the green mustard is also a nod to the plant-based corn dog.

Corn Dog Comparison

Bettergoods Plant-Based Corn Dogs aren’t vastly different from the other frozen vegan corn dogs available. I find them most similar to the corn dogs from Morningstar Farms. The only difference I note from Impossible corn dogs is that the Bettergoods hot dog is less firm. I have reviewed the other brands previously, but to me, a frozen vegan corn dog is a frozen vegan corn dog. The only kinds that compete are fresh fried dogs, carnival-style, like the Vegan Circus makes!

Yes, I’d Buy Again

I picked up my 4-pack of frozen Bettergoods Plant-Based Corn Dogs at my local Walmart for $4.66. I will definitely purchase these again and look forward to seeing what the Bettergoods line releases for us next. I like that Walmart is bringing items that would normally be considered “specialty” into their brand and am hopeful it means more people will try plant-based.
