“After 70 years, it’s still good to be Fat,” and at Fatburger you can be fat and vegan!
In 1952, Fatburger became a woman-owned business after founder Lovie Yancey split with her partner and removed “Mr.” from the restaurant’s name. The burger joint became an LA icon and claims to be “The Last Great Hamburger Stand.” Now owned by FAT Brands, the restaurant has franchises across the US and Canada.
“The name of the store was my idea, I wanted to get across the idea of a big burger with everything on it …a meal in itself.” -Lovie Yancey, Founder
Fatburger is known for big burgers with everything on it, and in 2018, they added the Impossible Burger, “ensuring we have an option for anyone looking to enjoy big, juicy burgers made entirely out of plants.”1 Then in 2019, Daiya’s Cheddar Cheese Slices joined their menu. Cheese is the #1 add-on to their burgers, and I am stoked to be included. The Impossible Burger comes with traditional toppings including lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, mustard, onion, pickle, and relish. To order vegan, remove the mayo and, if you want, add Daiya cheese. Now, Fatburger, we just need some vegan mayo! It was a delicious burger without it, but if you want to bring your own vegan mayo, I don’t think anyone would mind. In fact, it would show demand for the product. My burger was satisfying, and I ordered it with both kinds of French Fries, Fat and Skinny. The skinny fries ended up being my favorite because they’re crispier. My Impossible burger came dressed with lettuce, tomato, mustard, onion, pickle, relish, and super melty Daiya cheddar cheese. It was messy, juicy, tangy, and oh so tasty. I have been thinking about it ever since!
The Impossible Burger isn’t the only plant-based offering at Fatburger; they also have VEGAN MILKSHAKES! Vegan Milkshakes in Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, AND EVEN BANANA! Fatburger’s dairy-free ice cream is supplied by another LA icon, “Craigs Vegan,” and is made from cashews. I had the Maui Banana Vegan Milkshake, and it was a dream come true! Made with real banana puree and blended with oat milk, it tastes heavenly and is topped with Non-Dairy Coconut Reddi-Wip.
“We want Fatburger to be everyone’s ‘favorite hamburger stand,’ vegans included.” – Andy Wiederhorn, FAT Brands CEO
I visited the newer Fatburger in Manteca, which is right off the freeway, and it was so good! The service was great, and the store was very clean. This Fatburger location is a hybrid Fatburger/Buffalo’s Express/Hot Dog on a Stick, but the store is mainly decorated for/as Fatburger, with a drive-thru.
I will definitely be back, and am already debating on my next milkshake flavor! Which would you choose?

As with most non-vegan establishments, Fatburger’s cross-contamination notice states: “Standard kitchen operations involve shared cooking and preparation areas where cross-contact with other foods and allergens may occur,“2 but by ingredients and many vegans’ standards, their plant-based offerings are vegan-friendly (when you remove the mayo).
My personal thoughts on this are that any cross-contamination can occur at any establishment that is not 100% vegan, but that does not make a product unsuitable for vegans. Preparing vegan food on shared equipment is often standard practice, and as long as no animal products (e.g., butter, lard) are used in the process, it is generally considered vegan. Think of it as you would a packaged product that has the disclaimer “may contain milk due to shared equipment.” This is where personal purity comes into play, and it is up to you what you are willing to consume.
