Walmart recently launched its largest in-store food brand in 20 years, “Bettergoods” including a new line of plant-based offerings! Many items are not yet available locally, but I was able to find the new Bettergoods Dairy-Free Mac & Cheeze, and Plant-Based Chick’n Nuggets!
The Bettergoods Dairy-Free Mac & Cheeze comes in both Original Cheddar and White Cheddar, and I was able to snag both. The packaging and taste remind me of Daiya. The “cheeze” sauce comes pre-made in a pouch making this a simple plant-based swap with no need for additional ingredients like dairy-free butter and milk. The notable differences from Daiya I found are that “cheeze” is not as rich, and the noodles are not gluten-free providing a much more dense texture. Both flavors are buttery and tasty. Combined with Bettergoods Plant-Based Chick’n Nuggets, I think you have a winner for an easy meal for kids, teens, and those with sensory issues who still want to start their plant-based journey. Heck, even busy couples need snacks for movie night!
The Bettergoods Plant-Based Chick’n Nuggets come in a 16-piece for less than $4. The breading is crumbly like Impossible’s nuggets, and the taste is similar to Morningstar. They are tender on the inside and crispy on the outside, making an easy vegan swap for those who need their nuggs. These were good but not the most impressive vegan nugget, however, I love that they are affordable and accessible, so in my opinion they’re still something to write home about.
This new line reminds me of the “Good & Gather” line from Target where we saw the introduction of plant-based burgers, tofu, and more vegan fare. Similarly, Walmart’s Bettergoods line is not completely plant-based but offers many new vegan products including Oatmilk, Almondmilk, Dairy-Free Frozen Desserts (aka ice cream), Shredded Vegan Cheese, and more. The plant-based line is in green packaging, but vegan-friendly products can also be found in the “Made Without” collection including the Gluten-Free Cookie Dough Bites in white packaging (I tried those and wasn’t a big fan, but they are a “clean” snack you may enjoy).
I am excited about the introduction of more plant-based products at a huge retailer like Walmart. I hope consumers use this as an opportunity to try more animal-free products. Most of the Bettergoods line is under $5, with all items ranging from $2-$15, making plant-based much more accessible since Walmart is pretty much everywhere. (a gift and a curse?) I am most looking forward to finding the new Bettergoods Plant-Based Cheese Shreds in Cheddar and Mozzarella! Let me know if you spot it locally!
Which Bettergoods item are you looking forward to trying?
