Do you even brunch?
Whether it’s Bauhaus or Bauer’s Downtown, you can count on Chef Tye Bauer to include vegan-friendly dishes at any of his establishments. Vegan Specials and even dessert, rotate as an addtion to the staples on the restaurant’s main menu. Bauhaus Brunch is a newer addtion to the bounty from Bauer, and this past Sunday I took a trip with my friend Taylor to indulge.
Bauhaus’ brunch menu is stacked with choices for veg and omni folks, from sweet to savory! I am a fan of savory myself, so I opted for the Vegan Scramble with Potatoes and Chipotle ‘Sausage’ (with toast) from the standard brunch menu, and a Vegan Biscuit with Gravy from the specials.
I started with the Biscuit and Gravy, and wish this was bottomless (instead of the mimosas)! I grew up eating this dish because it’s what my grandma and papa would make me for breakfast when I would visit (that or pancakes). When I went veg, my grandparents did not necessarily understand, and so I missed out on eating biscuits and gravy prepared by the greats. I am so thankful that a local establishment is offering this dish, because when you make it for yourself, it loses some of its luster! Bauhaus’ biscuit was fluffy and spongey, making it the perfect vessel for the gravy, which we know is the main attraction! Thick and savory, with notes of smokiness, I could easily have made room for a gravy boat more.
The scramble was definitely larger than what you’d typically imagine from a tapas bar, that is generally known for serving “small plates” . The scramble is a tofu base, yellowed with what I think is turmeric, and served alongside a meatless chipotle sausage. Large onions and bell peppers married baby roasted potatoes, that were halved and sprinkled with cracked pepper and salt. The plant-based sausage was spicy, but mild enough for my tates. It was still on the heavier side of heat for my baby tastebuds, but with the toast and light flavor of my kombucha, it was tolerable. I like to layer the pieces of scramble and veggies on toast, and eat it like an open-faced sandwich, or ‘breakfast bruschetta’.
There are a couple other items on the standard menu that are vegan, or made to order vegan; Vegan Hash with Potatoes, Cauliflower, Onion, Bell Pepper, Asparagus, and Chipotle ‘Sausage’, or the Flakey Cinnamon Puff Pastry with Fruit (ask for no honey, or swap for syrup unless you’re a “beegan”). I love that I have options for next time that I haven’t tried yet, plus who knows what will be on the next specials menu?!
Brunch is served at Bauhaus every Sunday from 9am-2pm. Reservations are basically required, as even before the pandemic Bauhaus was a hot commodity! If the weather has you second-guessing the outing, don’t! Bauhaus has freestanding heaters, and even some cozier seating near a fire pit.
Bauhaus is small pub and restaurant located off of Scenic and Downey Ave. The front of the establishment is on busy Scenic Dr. so if you don’t know where to look, you might miss it! Parking is around back, and on side streets. Call for Reservations at: (209) 857-5819
