Are you even vegan if you’re not obsessed with HUMMUS?!
Oh Hummus, I remember the day we met. A family friend brought a tub of hummus over for a holiday party appetizer and suggested I try it, “because it’s vegan”. Well of course! That’s all I need to hear to give something a try. I am NOT PICKY! I just have dietary restrictions! Anyway, the hummus blew my mind and I could not believe I’d ever lived my life without that pureed chickpea magic. I later recreated the experience when I introduced my best friend to hummus, and to this day she is as obsessed with it as I am. She also finally went Veg! We have been friends for years, and she is slowly making the transition to a plant-based diet. I mention this to show that not everyone’s journey looks the same, and to not compare yours to others. Just practice compassion with your plate, and we can get there!
Last night I had dinner from Skewers Kabob House. It was a nice meal for such a hot day. Where is the FALL weather? WHERE?
Skewers offers Persian inspired Mediterranean Cuisine, and is proud to offer “something different” to our area. On Friday and Saturday evenings, Skewers Kabob House has “Starlight Dinner” with LIVE music! It is outdoor seating on the patio and space is limited, so reservations are recommended. I attended due to my friend performing, but still strongly encourage Social Distancing!
Pictured you will see a Hummus duo, Cabbage Dolma, and Shiraz Salad from Skewers.
The Cabbage Dolma is their vegan option of the two dolma on the menu, and it is filled with veggies, seasoned rice, herbs, and is wrapped in a cabbage leaf. The dolma has a smoky flavor due to the spices, so the Shiraz Salad is the perfect pairing.
Shiraz Salad is a Persian salad, that is full of chopped vegetables, and a light dressing. This salad contains NO lettuce, just cucumbers, red onion, tomatoes and parsley. It is very easy to eat (no runaway tomatoes) and provides satiation without feeling heavy or stuffed. The tangy citrus flavor of the salad is what gives a great balance to the spiced dolma, and I definitely recommend paring them together.
Lastly was my whole reason for dinner, hummus. The glorious bean spread that gathered us here today. I opted for Roasted Garlic Hummus and Cilantro Jalapeno flavors. The Garlic Hummus is addicting, and had I not ran out of Lavash, I would have scraped the tub of dip clean. The Jalapeno Hummus is also very tasty, and the kick of spice is nice along with the traditional hummus ingredients like garlic and lemon juice. In reference to the Jalapeno, I do not understand why I keep ordering spicy foods. I do not think I necessarily enjoy them. That being said, I like that their hummus is not velvety smooth, unlike store-bought. I am a fan of texture. I will probably even order the Cilantro Jalapeno flavor again.
The Hummus is served with Lavash bread, and I am aware that this is not a well-known variety of bread for many of us. Lavash is a traditional bread of Iran. It is part of the “flatbread family” and is almost always vegan friendly. It is very similar to a tortilla, in my opinion, as it is thinner and great for wraps! Try it instead of flatbread or tortillas next time you shop, and let me know if you are a fan!
For dinner, I had Cabbage Dolma, Shiraz Salad, and two types of Hummus with Lavash bread. These are not their only vegan-friendly menu items, however. There are two other vegan dishes on their menu as is; The House Salad, and Torchi Vegetable appetizer (pickled veggies). They have a few vegetarian items, that with modifications can be made vegan. This would include their Vegetable Kabob entrée, that when modified vegan, will omit the rice and substitute more veggies, or hummus, so FYI!
Thanks for sticking through to the end of my dinner recap! Skewers is currently open for patio dining Monday-Friday beginning at 11am, and Saturday-Sunday at 12pm. You can also order directly from their website for pick-up, or use GrubHub or Postmates for delivery.
