Ice Cream Company & Grill is a local icon in Modesto. First opened in 1979, the offerings have since expanded to include the addition of rotating vegan flavors, but the ice cream is still handmade in small batches. The Ice Cream Company is also a non-profit called “Enrich & Employ”, training those with barriers to employment. They train in a working restaurant for real-world experience. Their clients include; those with disabilities, people learning English, and those who have been through recovery.

Pictured is a new flavor that was recently highlighted on the Ice Cream Company’s menu- Vegan Rocky Road! Rich, chocolatey ice cream encases soft and chewy Dandies brand vegan marshmallows, and crunchy chopped almonds. While this flavor is not on the menu this week, you can find Vegan Chocolate Peppermint Oreo (Oat Base) and Vegan Orange Cinnamon (Coconut Base).

Fun Fact: Did you know Rocky Road Ice Cream is rumored to have been invented in California’s very own Oakland, California? In 1929 Dreyer’s brothers were adding mix-ins to a chocolate ice cream base to mimic a dessert candy. The creation was born and coined “Rocky Road” both for the dessert’s chunks and for the difficulty people had to overcome during the Great Depression.
