Indian food in minutes!
The Cumin Club is on a mission to bring authentic Indian flavors to your table quickly and simply. Their meal packs are preservative-free and freeze-dried, maintaining overall nutrition and flavor while allowing for a longer shelf-life. Developed by a team of chefs in India, all meals use regional ingredients to create comfort dishes that are easy to prepare.
The Cumin Club offers vegan and vegetarian meal kits, and I received all 5 vegan dishes to try. I was not previously familiar with freeze-dried meals aside from their use by astronauts, so I was pleasantly surprised to find how full of fresh flavor and texture every dish was. Each meal can be prepared in the Instant Pot, on the stove, or in the microwave- just add water or coconut milk!
The Vegan meal kit comes with: Ven Pongal (a mild rice and lentil dish), Masala Poha (flattened spicy rice), Malabar Veg Kurma (stew), Bisibelebath (spicy rice and lentil dish), and Misal Pav (spicy curry dish). Each meal serves 2, and can be eaten alone, or in preparation with additional veggies, proteins, or sides. I served mine with vegan naan, and frozen potato and pea samosas for a feast of flavor.
Most of The Cumin Club’s vegan dishes are spicy, but not unpleasantly. My favorite was the Ven Pogal, a rice dish with lentils and peas. It was mild in spice, with a nutty flavor and a balance of crunchy and soft textures. The second runner-up was the Malabar Veg Kurma. This was a cross between a hearty potato and split pea soup with spices like chili, cumin, ginger, and coriander. I cooled the spice down with a dollop of vegan sour cream and used my naan for dipping. All dishes are an exploration of spices and flavors that make for a quick and filling meal that won’t leave you wanting for takeout.
While India has a large population of vegetarians making it easy to find meat-free recipes and dishes, the use of dairy is prevalent. This can make navigating Indian menus as a vegan tricky. Join me and skip the takeout by making Indian food at home in minutes, with Meal Kits from The Cumin Club.
