“But, bacon though.”
Shut down one of the most common and annoying responses to veganism with new Ozo Plant-Based Bacon.
Available in three flavors, AppleWood Smoke, Spicy Jalapeno, and Cracked Black Pepper, Ozo is making its name known through their trademarked “True-Bite” eating experience. With Ozo, you can enjoy plant-based alternatives that deliver “the appearance, texture, and aroma that you’ve come to expect from meat-based proteins.” I found Ozo Spicy Jalapeno and Applewood Smoke Plant-Based Bacon at our local Sprouts store.
I tried both flavors on their own, as well as in a BLT. Right off the bat, during preparation, there is an unmistakable sizzle that is familiar and before now, definitely lacking in the plant-based bacon space. I cooked for several minutes on both sides as suggested, which gives a nice crunch without being overdone. The bacon is crispy while still being chewy and fatty. The AppleWood flavor is smoky and salty, while the Jalapeno gives a kick of peppery heat. The fatty part of the plant-based bacon seems to want to separate from the rest prior to being fully cooked. So, aside from being delicate and not overly greasy, I would have to say this is very close to traditional bacon both in texture and flavor. While we can’t quite make bacon roses, we can still enjoy a bacon-topped burger or as a side with a classic American breakfast!
I am very impressed with Ozo’s bacon. There are many vegan bacon alternatives on the market and most I have tried. None have really replicated the taste and crunch that we know and expect from bacon, so the “True-Bite” eating experience Ozo has created is much desired.
How would you enjoy Ozo’s Plant-Based Bacon? I see candied ‘bacon’ in my future!
