‘Tis the season for festive gatherings full of food, friends, and… figs?
Hellenic Farms is a “Greek Gourmet” food producer, that is 100% women-owned and the creator of Plant-Based Fig Salami. I was extremely curious about this product and even included my family in on the taste test. I found two varieties of Hellenic Farms Fig Salami at my local World Market: Orange Zest & Pepper, and Smoked Paprika & Pepper.
I paired my 2 flavors of Fig Salami with dairy-free cashew cheese, vegan-friendly crackers, fruit, and olives. Artisan salami is something I frequently see on charcuterie boards, so that was my inspiration for serving. I made up a “cheese board” and served it alongside red wine and Dexter. While the same color and texture as salami, it does not actually taste like salty, air-dried meat. Hellenic Farms Fig Salami is made of dried figs and spices (their other flavors also contain nuts). Both flavors of Fig Salami have a hint of sweetness due to being dried fruit, but with added seasoning becomes smoky and peppery as well. Unlike meat-based salami, Fig Salmi is gluten-free, non-GMO, and great for digestion and heart health. A great replacement for meat on a charcuterie board, and definitely something worth incorporating into your holiday appetizers. Fig Salami is unique and definitely next in line as a plant-based craze.
While I found two flavors of Hellenic Farms Fig Salami (Orange Zest & Pepper, and Smoked Paprika & Pepper) there are 3 other varieties to choose from, online in their web-store or via retailers like GTFO It’s Vegan: Pistachio & Cinnamon, Almonds & Black Pepper, and Pistachio Pepper. The inclusion of nuts in the Fig Salami sounds intriguing, so I will definitely be on the lookout for those next.
What flavor of Fig Salami are you interested in trying? Would you serve it up the same way?
