The raddest bakery I have ever seen is just over 30 minutes from Anaheim, in Upland, California.

Cosmic Bakery is home of the “Astrotarts” and serves out-of-this-world vegan treats with nostalgic flair. I have been fangirling over this bakery since the Instagram algorithm grated me one of their posts featuring their Astrotarts troll mascot. I was immediately intrigued and upon finding absolutely everything is vegan- I was hooked. Scrolling through their feed of creations I found they have many cool treat decorations referencing pop-culture, like Goosebumps, Garbage Pail Kids, and even horror icons- the most recent being Ghostface (for Scream 7) and Leprechaun (Happy St Patrick’s day!).

When I learned I was going to be just a short distance from Cosmic Bakery on my visit to Anaheim, I had to schedule a detour. The bakery itself is worth the trip! It’s like a punk rock version of Lisa Frank and the vibe is genuinely spacey and fun. The colors are vibrant and crash-landed into the wall is a UFO that I can only guess harbored visitors stopping in for a signature Astrotart. Cosmic Bakery has many vegan treats but is famed for their vegan version of a pop-tart, the Astrotart. I knew I had to snag some of those along with whatever else could make it back to the valley intact. My assortment ended up including; Cherry Invasion Astrotarts, Cookies N Cream Astrotarts, a Confetti Cookie, S’mores Cookie, Basic B Brownie, Cinnamon Trolls, Irish Cream Cinnamon Troll, a Coneffti Cookie Sandie with Cotton Candy Buttercream, a Double Chocolate Cookie Sandie with Cookie Dough Buttercream, a slice of Neon Daisy Pineapple Banana Spice Cake, and 8 mini donuts! Whew!

My mom and sister have a sweet tooth so I knew I’d have someone to share my space bounty with at home, and I was right. They loved each of the creations as much as I did, and were just as thrilled hearing about my experience visiting Cosmic Bakery as I was living it. The mini donuts are cake donuts that held their shape while still being soft, and each had different flavored icing. The cake slice was super moist and the frosting was whipped and tangy. The Cinnamon Trolls were soft and spongey, with gooey frosting, and are brought back to life even the next day after a few seconds in the microwave. The Basic B Brownie and Cookies are best described as moist, decadent, buttery, and MASSIVE! The Cookie Sandies are big enough to share, and the Cassette Cookies should be called CD Cookies because they are almost as large! I’m not complaining in the least, however, as I have a couple wrapped in the freezer ready to reheat when the mood strikes me.

Next door to Cosmic Bakery is Rad Coffee, who I’d consider to be the bakery’s tough older sister. The vibe is dark, the music is loud, and all their merch features horror icons throughout the decades. Rad Coffee stocks Cosmic Bakery treats, so while the bakery was gathering my order I stopped in to see what was available. In honor of the new Scream movie, they had 1-800-GHOST FACE Astrotarts in Pistachio Haze flavor, and even “STAB” cookies! I grabbed the Astrotart for my on-the-road treat, and Rad Coffee was able to veganize for me the limited edition coffee drink “Final Girl” from their Ghost Face menu- complete with dairy-free whipped cream! Rad Coffee and Cosmic Bakery are like both facets of my personality depicted in physical spaces (think Wednesday Adams and Enid). It was such a fun stop and so worth the wait! I can’t wait to visit again!

Cosmic Bakery is a fully vegan bakery that is women-owned and hella cool. Located in Upland, California you can find plant-based treats, 7 days a week, both within the bakery itself and at Rad Coffee locations.
