Vegan options at Vallarta Market!
A chain of Latin-owned markets has expanded to Modesto, California, offering a surprising number of vegan options. The first Vallarta Market was family owned and operated and opened in Van Nuys, California in the 80’s, offering native Mexican favorites to the community. Now the market has expanded to over 50 locations in California. The newest addition to Modesto is off Pelandale Ave, and coming soon to the Century Center off Orangeburg.
Aside from the typical bulk grains, nuts and spices, plethora of plant milks, and even frozen fare, there is more to be found than meets the eye. Vallarta Market has a fresh ‘Guacamole & Pico De Gallo’ stand where they make guac and pico on the spot (with our without added spice), ‘La Frutería’ a cut fruit stand, plus a ‘Jugos Y Aguas Frescas’ bar serving juice shots and fresh made beverages.
The prepared food area is filled with clean eats with minimal ingredients like roasted cauliflower, regular and sweet potatoes, quinoa, rice blends, and even beans without lard or pork. Most surprising of all was their prepared vegan macaroni and cheese! The mac & cheese was ok. It’s a very basic blend of vegan cheese over noodles, but for a market not catering to vegans, this is a unique find and something I think many will enjoy.
There is a refrigerated plant-based section filled staples like Miyoko’s Liquid Mozzarella, Just Egg, tofu, vegan meats and cheeses, plus harder to find products like Treeline Cashew Cheese spreads (my favorite), Follow Your Heart Feta and Parmesan. I picked up the Plantspired Tofu Tossables I’ve been wanting to try! (Read the Plantspired post here.)
Vallarta Market is secret a haven for vegans looking for whole foods, and those who want prepared foods they can simply heat and eat. Either way, you can find staples for a vegan Mexican menu, and apparently even prepared vegan macaroni and cheese.
I know I’m late to the party, but am stoked about Vallarta Market being local. I can’t wait for the Century Center location to open!
Have you been? What did you try?
