When I first saw Ming’s Bings I thought, “What a great product.. for someone else”. I didn’t even know what an original Bing was! Flash-forward to a tasting I experienced at Expo West in March- after one bite of the Cheeseburger Bing, I understood the hype and couldn’t wait to stock my freezer with more flavors.
If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering what the heck a traditional Bing is. Bings, or “Jianbings” are a popular Chinese street food, typically served for breakfast. A fried batter is topped with things like egg, sausage, veggies, and sauce, then folded into a portable and edible pocket. Ming’s Bings are a plant-based and 21st-century spin on the dish, including pockets for any time of day. Ming’s Bings was created with a mission of healing through food. Chef Ming Tsai was searching for plant-based meals for his wife who was diagnosed with cancer, and found store’s variety was lacking. Ming’s Bing’s ingredients are chosen based on flavor AND their health benefits, which is why their tagline is, “Eat more super!” In addition to healing through food, Ming’s Bings donates a portion of its proceeds to Family Reach, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the Jimmy Fund.
While there are a variety of Ming’s Bings available, all are dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan. Of the assortment, I received: 2 boxes of Breakfast Ming’s Bings– Veggie, Egg & Cheese, and Sausage, Egg, & Cheese, and 2 anytime Ming’s Bings– Cheeseburger and Buffalo Cauliflower. I am the biggest fan of the breakfast bings, but all 4 were absolutely delicious and flavors I would enjoy again. Each bing is wrapped in brown rice paper, giving a similar taste and crunch to an eggroll wrapper. This makes the perfect casing for the warm and bubbly vegan cheese, meat alternatives, and other fillings it holds.
Ming’s Bings sent me the 4 boxes I tried, so it was a surprise to me which flavors I’d receive. I was pleased to be reunited with the first flavor of Ming’s Bings I tried- Cheeseburger, and intrigued by the other- Buffalo Cauliflower. The Cheeseburger Ming’s Bing filling is reminiscent of hamburger helper, as it’s a mixture of seasoned UNCUT plant-based beef and creamy Viloife cheddar. The filling is mixed and not layered, making it more of a cheeseburger-filled eggroll than an eggroll-wrapped cheeseburger. The Buffalo Cauliflower Ming’s Bings are filled with crispy cauliflower, vegan mozzarella, and hot sauce, making for the easiest way to enjoy vegan cauliflower wings! This was the spiciest flavor of the 4 but not hot enough to advise caution.
Breakfast Ming’s Bings are the perfect portable breakfast on the go. Pop-out of the freezer, heat, rest on a paper towel while you gather your belongings, then enjoy while on your way. Filled with fluffy Just Egg, melty Violife dairy-free cheese, and either chopped veggies or Beyond the Butcher’s UNCUT plant-based sausage, both options are savory and like a crunchy version of a breakfast burrito. I most favored the Veggie, Egg, and Cheese Ming’s Bings, but would love to eat either for breakfast again.
While mine were gifted, Ming’s Bings are frozen and found in various markets including, Safeway, Sprouts, and Target. You can find a store near you using the locator feature on their website or order directly from MingsBings.com. They are currently running a promo for buying 2 boxes in-store and getting 1 free with a rebate! Check out their homepage for more, and enjoy your bings!
