After my TCHO factory tour, I took home a bag full of chocolate and felt informed and ready to taste them all!
For a recap- TCHO Chocolate is 100% Plant-Based, Fair Trade Certified, B-Corporation Certified, Certified Organic, and Non-GMO. I visited TCHO on their first day of producing new bite-sized “lil fair squares” so I got some minis to take home along with the full-size packs!
TCHO’s cacao is ethically sourced, and their chocolate is made in Berkeley, California. TCHO has a myriad of dark chocolate and oat milk varieties, as well as some plant-based white chocolate in seasonal flavored bars and baking pieces. I took home a variety pack of Holy Fudge, Born Fruity, Dark Duo, Aww Nuts, Choco Latte, and Toffee Time, plus minis of Oat My Gawd, a bag of Choco Blanco baking couverture hexagons, and the two seasonal bars from Fall: Karl the Nog and Pumpkin Up.
The oat-milk chocolate varieties are my favorite, but the dark chocolate flavors are just as delicious! I was surprised to find that even the high cacao content dark chocolate bars did not have the distinct bite that bitter chocolate often presents. The flavor is bold and decadent without being overpowering. Below I give a brief overview of the TCHO flavors, as described by TCHO and myself.
Oat My Gawd (bite-size and baking)– This is a fan-favorite flavor and you will taste why! Creamy and caramelly chocolate that melts in your mouth. I think tastes just like a mug of Swiss Miss!
Toffee Time (full bar and bite-size)– Expo West NEXXY winner of 2022! The same creamy oat milk chocolate meets sticky vegan toffee bits and a bite of sea salt, for a caramelly treat.
Coco Latte (full bar)– Rich and bold coffee truffle, covered in oat milk chocolate. This has an intense coffee flavor that when combined, offers a more subtly sweet oat milk chocolate. Described as caramelly and energizing. Uses Oakland’s Blue Bottle Coffee!
Aww Nuts (full bar)– Slightly bitter dark chocolate is balanced with sea salt and almond butter. This chocolate is rich and nutty. The almonds are sourced locally in Chico from Maisie Jane’s!
Holy Fudge (full bar and bite-size)– Fudgy, truffle-filled dark chocolate. Described as having notes of crisp brownie edges, I found this to be the perfect description and would even compare it to a dark chocolate ganache. It is a rich dark chocolate flavor without bitterness or bite.
Born Fruity (full bar and bite-size)– Dark chocolate with a fruity undertone. I find the flavor to be reminiscent of a dark chocolate-covered cherry. Decadent with a tangy finish.
Dark Duo (full bar)– This bar is made by coating Holy Fudge in a Born Fruity shell. Described as lush and fruity, this is a “distinguished cacao experience” with perfect balance.
Choco Blanco (baking)- These are oat milk white chocolate, couverture hexagons made for baking (or snacking). Buttery white chocolate pieces with a hint of butterscotch flavor.
Karl the Nog (seasonal)- Eggnog oat milk with nutmeg and rum. Super robust and earthy flavors with a powerful eggnog finish.
Pumpkin Up (seasonal)- Smooth oat milk white chocolate is mixed with pumpkin spice and envelopes crunchy ginger snap pieces. Sweet pumpkin pie flavor with a spicy finish.
I don’t have a favorite flavor as it stands, because each bar is as delicious as the other. My go-to, for now, is the mini Oat My Gawd, as I LOVE vegan milk chocolate! The new bite-size TCHO chocolates are currently available in two box sets: “Oatally Awesome” and “Globe Trotter”. “Oatally Awesome” includes Oat My Gawd– oat milk chocolate, and Toffee Time- oat milk chocolate with vegan toffee bits and sea salt. “Globe Trotter” includes Holy Fudge– dark chocolate from Ghana, and Born Fruity– dark chocolate from Peru. You can find TCHO chocolate locally at Safeway, but it is also available online and is now in Whole Foods stores.
