Check out my take-out fake-out with Red Moon!
Recently Red Moon launched a line of plant-based versions of customer favorites including; “Beef” & Broccoli, Kung Pao Chick’n, Pepper “Steak”, Orange Chick’n, and Sweet & Sour Chick’n. I was able to locate the first three at our local Sprouts store and they have been waiting in my freezer for me to taste-test. Red Moon is owned by the food conglomerate Golden West Food Group, an umbrella company for many food brands.
I am thrilled about finding a one-pan dish that can easily satisfy take-out cravings. I am all for the convenience of frozen, plant-based food that provides the same satisfaction as take-away without the worry of hidden animal ingredients. All Red Moon’s vegan sauces have a kick of umami from mushroom seasoning, extract, and even mushroom soy sauce. This replaces the ingredients typically found in Asian dishes that provide a salty kick made from oyster and other fish sauces.
Out of the three, I was most impressed with the Pepper “Steak” which even I was surprised by. I am typically more a fan of vegan chicken alternatives than beef, but that is just my personal taste preference. I anticipated I would love the Kung Pao Chick’n best, but the plant-based beef ended up topping the list. While the texture of the “Beef” and “Steak” is the same, the sauce and veggies make for a different dish. Red Moon’s Pepper “Steak” is both tender and chewy and is mixed with diced bell peppers. The sauce is a savory blend of peppery soy sauce and garlic. The “Beef” and Broccoli has a sweeter sauce with strong hints of garlic and ginger. Their Kung Pao Chick’n is soy-based with a more familiar texture and is paired with mushrooms, peppers, and toasted peanuts. After pan-frying, it’s crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and glazed in a sweet and peppery sauce that is more of a sweet heat than hot.
This weekend’s premiere of Turning Red on Disney+ allotted the perfect opportunity to try Red Moon’s plant-based entrees! A movie centered around a coming-of-age tale where a teen girl named Mei Lee turns into a giant red panda anytime she loses control of her emotions. It’s a story of learning to balance your family’s expectations with your own ambitions and most importantly, learning to embrace your inner panda. Without giving too much away, this product actually ended up being very fitting for the movie!
Have you seen Turning Red yet? It is so cute!
If you spot the other Red Moon plant-based entrees in stores, please let me know! I’d love to try them all!
