“Sea What’s Possible” with plant-based shrimp!
Shrimp is popular seafood due to its affordability and catch volume. However, aside from shrimp being living things, the demand for seafood steadily rises, while practices in the seafood industry are leading to overfishing and applying pressure to species in the ocean. This is precisely why Van Cleve Seafood Co, based out of Virginia, set to create a sustainable alternative while maintaining an incredible seafood tasting experience. In 2020 Plant-Based Seafood Co was founded and is female and family-owned. Since the founders come from a traditional seafood background, they know what consumers want in terms of taste and appearance when creating satisfying alternatives. One taste and you will understand why they’re tokened “Mind Blown“.
While there are other vegan seafood options on the market, Mind Blown has a competitive edge in that they come with fish-fueled knowledge that doesn’t go unnoticed. When I found the Mind Blown Dusted Shrimp, I was immediately intrigued. I prepared my dusted shrimp in the air fryer and paired with a cool lemon Cappelli pasta salad and a simple lemon dill aioli. If you are not familiar with shrimp, it has a mild fishy flavor and slightly sweet and salty. The inner texture is chewy and firm, which I would compare to a tougher mushroom, and the breading is crispy and salty, with touches of lemon and garlic. Mind Blown’s Dusted Shrimp is an immaculate dupe, and I can definitely see sushi restaurants and the like carrying this in the near future. In fact, I think a dream would be to see this pop-up in seafood restaurants on wharves and piers in places like Monterey Bay. Manifest it with me!

Mind Blown Dusted Shrimp Ingredients: Shrimp- konjac powder, vegetable gum, vegetable root starch, paprika, brown sugar, sea salt, plant-based vegan seasoning. Breading- tapioca flour, coconut flour, egg replacer (potato starch, tapioca flour) leavening (calcium lactate, calcium carbonate, cream of tartar), cellulose gum, modified cellulose), crystalized lemon (citric acid, lemon oil, lemon juice), garlic, paprika, turmeric, and other spices.
