Babybel is a French brand of snackable cheese, that has long been known for its individually red wax-wrapped portions. Within the last year, Babybel launched its first ever plant-based cheese made to mimic mozzarella. Plant-Based Babybel is wrapped in green wax, dawned with the Vegan Society’s trademark ensuring it is animal-free, and the vegan cheese wheels come in an 80% paper content bag rather than the usual plastic nets.

I tried my Plant-Based Babybel on its own and as a mini Caprese. First, let me say that the experience of opening a Babybel wheel is part of what makes this such a fun food. Unwrap, peel, unveil, and indulge! The flavor of mozzarella is prominent, touching on both salty and sour notes, and is packed with calcium and vitamin B-12. The flavor and consistency remind me of the string cheese I used to devour as a kid, even down to the somewhat waxy texture.

There have been mixed reviews regarding this new vegan cheese. I personally enjoyed it, and will be purchasing more. It is worth noting, however, that Babybel is partnering with food brand Superbrewed to enhance its cheeses in the future. Superbrewed uses a plant-based postbiotic protein that is made from fermentation, is allergy free, and loaded with nutrients. So if you weren’t necessarily a fan this time, stay tuned for future recipe modifications!

I found my Plant-Based BabyBel at Sprouts, but stores like Costco, Target, and O’Briens should have them in stock in the future.
