Have you heard of Next Meats? Officially available in America in select stores across the country, online, and even in some restaurants, Next Meats is a plant-based beef alternative from Tokyo. I entered a giveaway with Happy Cow and Next Meats recently, and was one of the lucky recipients of a sample pack!
Next Meats was founded in 2017 in Japan with the goal to create sustainably delicious plant-based meat, that doesn’t compromise flavor, texture, or our planet. Three plant-based beef alternatives are currently available; Japanese Beef Bowl, Japanese Short Rib, and Japanese Skirt Steak (rumor has it they are even working on a “next egg”!). Made with non-GMO soy and lightly seasoned, each pack is ready to heat, eat, and enjoy in countless ways.
On my TikTok unboxing, I asked for suggestions on how I should prepare my Next Meats, and one comment I found inspirational was lettuce cups! I opted to try this with the “short rib”, as this is actually the serving suggestion image on the package. I used butter lettuce, sushi rice, peppers, and scallions to dress my wraps and topped with glazed Japanese Short Rib. I made Asian-inspired tacos with seasoned “skirt steak”, chili mayo slaw, and corn tortillas. With the “beef bowl” meat I made a colorful grain bowl, adding veggies and chipotle mayo.
The texture and flavor of each cut are similar, although each is seasoned slightly differently. I added some scratch-made sauces to the skirt steak and short rib to elevate the flavor, but even without added seasoning, Next Meats is flavorful. I would describe Next Meats as juicy, easy to chew, salty, and slightly smoky.
I would definitely like to try a vegan “cheesesteak” sandwich made with Next Meats, and even pizza, so I will definitely need to place an order online. While Next Meats is not yet available locally in-store, you can order online like me, at NextMeats.US
