Welcome to a new school of fish!
The ocean’s resources are depleting, and due to overfishing, this includes our fishy friends! Bruce said it best, “Fish are friends, not food” but even still it remains a main source of protein for many- enter Current Foods.
Current Foods recognized the potential of offering a plant-based alternative to one of the most popular meats on the market, and in doing so, what a huge positive impact it could create for the ocean and our planet. Using plants, Current Foods has created a raw alternative to both salmon and tuna, loaded with the same vitamins and nutrients as the real thing (Omega-3’s, Iron, B12), and nothing you don’t (mercury, microplastics, etc). Current Foods fish alternatives use tomato and radish for coloring, bamboo and potato for starchy texture, oil from algae for taste and Omega 3’s, and peas for protein. It really is seafood made from plants!
I used the Current Foods Salmon in the way I have most commonly seen raw salmon served- Sushi! I whipped up some seasoned sushi rice and created Salmon Nigiri (raw salmon over sushi rice), and an absolutely delicious DIY sushi roll. I found the flavor of Current Foods Salmon to be most discernable in Nigiri form. I was nervous this would be too fishy for me, but it was easily palatable. The salmon is smooth with a buttery texture that melts in your mouth. The flavor is fairly mild but both oily and salty. I do not think I have ever had salmon before, so this is my first taste of a vegan salmon alternative at home. I find it tasty and palatable but if you are wondering if it is a 1:1 replacement for the real thing, I personally have no idea.
My favorite use of Current Foods Salmon was the sushi roll FOR SURE! I love veggie sushi already, but the addition of the salmon was a flavor I didn’t know I was without. Along with Current Foods Salmon, I filled my sushi roll with sliced cucumber and avocado- my favorites! I made a spicy mayo out of vegan dressing and sriracha for drizzling on top, and dipped my sushi coins in soy sauce for added umami. The sauces really helped elevate the salmon’s flavor and if you are also someone who is not familiar with the taste of raw salmon this may be the best means of introduction for you.
I found Current Foods Plant-Based Salmon in the meat department of my local Raley’s. I absolutely LOVE seeing plant-based options in the meat section of the grocery, as it brings the alternative to the forefront of meat consumers who may otherwise never know the option exists. I foresee myself using this vegan smoked salmon alternative in future poke bowls, on bagels, and of course more sushi! Lemme know if you see Current Foods Tuna around these parts- I wanna try!
