Beyond Meat Jerky
Jerky is rumored to have existed since the dawning of pyramids, so it makes sense that plant-based alternatives would be readily available in the 21st century. Beyond Meat believes “there is a better way to feed our future”, as the animal agriculture industry’s impact on climate change is overwhelming. With the inclusion of plant-based meats in our diets as consumers, we can do our part to shift change in the right direction. Beyond Meat is here to deliver the same satisfaction as animal-based products, with a vegan nutrition label.
Their newest advent- Beyond Meat Jerky– was leaked via news outlets in January 2022, when someone shared the product in a YouTube video after receiving it as a gift and did not know it was supposed to be a secret! (PR stunt? I still don’t know.) This led to a preemptive hype from the vegan community, myself included, and a continued probing of store shelves until its release.
I am happy to report I have officially found all three flavors on sale over the weekend at Target! It seems most stores only have two of the three flavors, but I wanted to taste them all! I am glad I did too because each Beyond Meat Jerky has its own savory flavor that is tasty and cravable.
All three varieties smell, look and feel like meat. I think the biggest difference I notice between Beyond Meat Jerky and other plant-based jerkies is that it is not greasy or oily, and is much chewier. It is also made from pea and mung bean protein and is free from both soy and gluten. The Original Beyond Meat Jerky has a slight sweetness, is not too salty, with a slight pepperiness. The Teriyaki Beyond Meat Jerky is sweet, with notes of caramelized onion and garlicky citrus. My favorite of the three is the Hot & Spicy Beyond Meat Jerky. It has a tint of red color forewarning its flavor and is hot without being inedible. The spicy and salty flavor leaves me torn between finishing the bag and reaching for a beverage, and that is what I am looking for in a savory snack.
