Pizza Twist is here!

About a year ago I read an article stating Pizza Twist was getting its very own Modesto location. Then months passed with no word. Well, it is finally time! A twist on pizza is officially available in our neighborhood! Pizza Twist offers traditional, Indian-style, veggie, vegan, gluten-free, and Halal pizzas, so there is truly something for everyone! The Modesto location is off Oakdale Road and has been open for roughly a week.

It is not often you will find a restaurant that offers as many vegan options as traditional! According to Pizza Twist, all of their crust options are vegan-friendly, including their gluten-free and cauliflower crusts, and almost all of their sauces have a plant-based option- including white sauce and vegan ranch for dippin’! In addition to dairy-free cheese, they have three mock meats including plant-based pepperoni, sausage, and chicken.

I stopped to fuel Friday’s pizza night and ordered a Plant-Based “All Meat” Pizza, Plant-Based Combination Pizza, 6 Plant-Based Buffalo Wings, and Plant-Based Cheesy Bread. This Cheesy Bread is TO DIE FOR and is definitely orderable on its own. The bread is layered with a creamy white sauce and garlic spread, then topped with yummy vegan cheese. It is my new favorite thing, and if you try anything please let it be this!

The Plant-Based “All Meat” Pizza was layered with red sauce, non-dairy cheese, and Pizza Twist’s plant-based pepperoni, sausage, and chicken. The Plant-Based Combination also has red sauce, vegan cheese, and three plant-based meats, with added bell pepper, red onion, black olives, and mushrooms. I ordered both pizzas with the original hand-tossed crust which is crispy and crunchy with nearly no gum line (where the toppings meet the dough and develop a different texture than the outer crust). The crust is dusted in cornmeal, which gets my mouth watering every time! While the corn meal is used to keep the dough from sticking to the pan, it ends up making the crust crispier and creates an unmatched flavor. The vegan cheese is tasty and melts fairly well, but the mock meats are something that really set this pizza chain apart. All three mock meats are very different and definitely deserve some explanation before ordering. The plant-based pepperoni is the closest of the three to the meat it is replicating. It is spicy but when cut with sauce and cheese is palatable. Their plant-based sausage is chickpea-based and more like a sausage spiced mini falafel than imitation meat. It is good, but definitely not the same as the fake sausage crumbles I am used to. I think my favorite mock meat of the lot is their plant-based chicken. It is soy-based, and when not seasoned or dressed in a sauce has a similar texture to fried tofu. However, when in larger wing-like pieces and coated buffalo sauce, it is juicy and meaty making for a satisfying dupe. The least spicy buffalo sauce was still too spicy for me, however, so this is my take after a single plant-based buffalo wing!

In addition to Pizzas, Wings, and Cheesy Bread at Pizza Twist, you can find plant-based appetizers like Samosas, French Fries, Twist Pockets (think calzones), Pasta, and Salads. What will you try first?

Please note, Pizza Twist does not currently list their ingredients or allergen information on their website (although there is a place for it). I have contacted them to see if they can provide this and if so, I will update this post with the ingredients list at the bottom of the page. In the meantime, I am using the information I have sourced online and from the owners of Modesto’s Pizza Twist. If there is a specific question or allergy concern, it will be best to contact your local Pizza Twist directly. The Modesto owners did say they would work on obtaining the ingredients and allergen list to have on hand in the future. While this is a franchise, this location is a new business run by a family.
