I tried it all, so now you know you have to!
This Tuesday I had the privilege of attending July’s Taco Tuesday, and was invited to try something from each vendor, including the host Cast Iron! This month’s Vegan Soulstice vendors were; Sugar Mama 209, Cuco etc, Comida De Jen, and Sautayed!
On the last Tuesday of each month, Cast Iron Trading Co. collaborates with Vegan Soulsitice to present Stockton with an all-vegan Taco Tuesday. On Taco Tuesday Cast Iron offers only vegan menu items, along with beer and cocktails. Vegan Soulstice arrives with a selection of vendors dishing up a variety of tacos and other vegan treats.
I started inside at Cast Iron and ordered a Margarita, Brussels Sprouts Tacos, and a Crunchwrap! The tacos were encased in a corn-flour tortilla that was a star on its own, but I was most impressed with the blackened brussels sprouts. The Brussels were cooked until just tender, and I was surprised at how filling they were! The crunchwrap was filled with “secret spiced” Beyond Meat, along with the traditional crunchwrap fillings like lettuce, pico de gallo, a corn tortilla, and had a housemade crema and cheeze sauce. The chipotle crema on the tacos and the vegan queso sauce on the crunchwrap provided a slight kick of heat, and really brought the dishes to another level. I think both dishes would be great introductions to a vegan lifestyle for those that are curious, but for those of us already on the journey these are dishes you will want to try!
The other main dishes I tried were the Adobada Street Tacos from Comida de Jen (“Jen’s Food”), and the Bulgogi Potato Tacos from Sautayed. Jen’s street tacos were probably the most traditional option available. They were filled with adobo marinated soy meat, that is powerfully flavorful and spicy. Comida de Jen’s Adobada Street Tacos were topped with cilantro, and red onion, and served with salsa and lime. They were both satisfying and authentic. Sautayed had Asian-inspired tacos and I opted for the Bulgogi Potato Taco Plate. The potatoes were smashed and seasoned along with soy bulgogi beef, then topped with cucumber, pickled red onion, fresh green onion, and jalapeno. They were served in a corn tortilla that was crunchy and coated in a cashew parmesan and topped with spicy mayo, alongside veggie fried rice that was savory and salty. The creativity never peaks with Sautayed’s dishes!
I brought home a slice of chocolate coffee cake from Saytayed, one of Sugar Mama’s Cinnamon Rolls and Cookies n Cream Rolls, and a bottle of Strawberry Oat’Chata from Cuco etc! The coffee cake was moist and despite being coated in chocolate chips was not overly sweet. Sugar Mama’s Cinnamon Rolls can rival Cinnabon and I will fist fight someone who claims different now that I have tried them. The roll is buttery, lightly sweet, and provides a punch of clove and cinnamon spice in a way that is nostalgic and surprising. The Cookies and Creme roll reigns supreme in my mouth, however, and the whipped frosting is downright orgasmic. I am an Oreo gal for sure, but this roll is an elevated sugary sweet experience that I am looking forward to enjoying again and again. As for Cuco’s horchata, I wanted to try all the flavors so I let the color pink guide me and selected the Strawberry Oat-Chata. Made from a blend of rice and oats, the horchata is then sweetened and seasoned with vanilla, cinnamon, and strawberries. The flavor is a more nutty and rounded, full-tasting strawberry milk. It was the perfect pairing with Sugar Mama 209’s Cinnamon Roll!
Absolutely everything was amazing, and every chef outdid themselves. I am so looking forward to attending future Taco Tuesdays with Cast Iron and the same, as well as other Vegan Soulstice vendors. If you haven’t made the trip, take the opportunity to support our local community and enjoy delicious food you can feel good about eating. Thank you again for the invitation Vegan Soulstice, I was honored to be this month’s “Featured Foodie”!
